Short-drama apps in 2026: how the platforms compare
A 48-title snapshot reveals how new-release shelves differ, alongside free viewing, language editions, cast credits and AI production across 28 services.
My Drama’s and NetShort’s new-release shelves made different pitches in our October 19 check. Nine of the first 12 My Drama listings carried thriller or mystery tags. On NetShort, 11 of 12 carried Revenge, Karma or Karma Payback tags. Before choosing another app, it helps to see what its current shelves are putting in front of you.
There are also two different races underway. FreeReels led worldwide downloads in the first quarter of 2026; DramaBox led in-app purchase revenue. The biggest app by installs is not necessarily where viewers spend the most, and neither ranking measures acting, translation or story quality.
This guide covers 28 services, starting with a closer comparison of four current new-release shelves.
What 48 new listings showed
On October 19, 2026, we checked the first 12 different titles, in displayed order, on the English New Release shelves of ReelShort, My Drama, NetShort and Vigloo. We counted their own tags and checked the corresponding title pages. Labels differ between services; zero means no matching tag was listed in this sample. This is a snapshot of those shelves, not a breakdown of their full catalogs. The title-by-title sample is available as a CSV.
| New-release shelf | What stood out in the 12-title sample | Where that helps you choose |
|---|---|---|
| ReelShort | Eight carried fantasy or supernatural tags; nine title pages explicitly identified AI production. | Browse this shelf for animated and AI fiction; check the individual production description when you want filmed actors. |
| My Drama | Nine carried thriller or mystery tags, and 11 series pages named performers. | A stronger starting point in this snapshot for following actors into suspense and relationship thrillers. |
| NetShort | Eleven carried Revenge, Karma or Karma Payback tags. | The strongest emphasis on Revenge and Karma labels in this four-shelf snapshot. |
| Vigloo | Four carried fantasy or supernatural tags; two carried BL/LGBTQ tags. | A mix of fantasy romance and BL, rather than one narrowly defined type of Korean drama. |
The My Drama difference is visible in Dying for Your Love, which names Andrew Campen and Bella Mraz. ReelShort’s Spoiled by Four Sea Monster Husbands explicitly describes an AI-generated animated production. Both offer dramatic romance, but a viewer following an actor and a viewer seeking an imagined fantasy world have different reasons to open them. Cast credits alone do not establish whether AI effects or dubbing were used.
For the other services, these are the distinctions supported by their catalogs and published features:
| What matters to you | Apps to compare | The distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Watching without paying upfront | FreeReels, Melolo, ReelShort | Free-access claims, subscription options and rewarded episode unlocks are different models. |
| Following actors or participating in a story | My Drama, ReelShort | My Drama has performer pages; ReelShort advertises interactive live-action titles. |
| BL romance | Vigloo, ReelShort | Compare actual settings: adult workplace and crime stories versus titles such as ReelShort’s school romance. |
| Portuguese or Indonesian dialogue | GoodShort | Specific releases carry dubbed labels in each language; a translated menu alone tells you less. |
| Watching on a television | FlexTV | Its U.S. App Store listing includes Apple TV support. |
| AI fiction or a mixture of AI and filmed actors | ShortPeak, SagaBox, Loomi | AI-produced series, character chat and hybrid productions offer different experiences. |

Why the download and revenue charts tell different stories
Sensor Tower estimates more than 850 million downloads in Q1 2026, up 140% year over year, and about $750 million in in-app purchase revenue, up 20%. These are installs, not unique viewers; the revenue figure excludes advertising.
The same quarter’s rankings in Adjust’s June report, using Sensor Tower data, show the split:
| Rank | Downloads | In-app purchase revenue |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | FreeReels | DramaBox |
| 2 | ReelShort | ReelShort |
| 3 | NetShort | NetShort |
| 4 | DramaBox | DramaWave |
| 5 | Melolo | GoodShort |
Geography helps explain it. Sensor Tower places FreeReels’ growth in India and Southeast Asia, highlights Melolo’s ad-supported audience in Indonesia, and identifies ReelShort’s revenue and engagement strength in the U.S. An IAP chart leaves out the advertising that supports some of that viewing.
For someone choosing an app, this makes “most popular” a poor substitute for a more practical question: how does this service let you watch? FreeReels and Melolo belong in the comparison even though neither appears in that revenue top five.
Which short-drama apps are free?
There is no single free-viewing arrangement across these apps. Their current store pages describe three approaches:
| App | What its public listing says | What that means when choosing |
|---|---|---|
| FreeReels | The developer promotes free access without subscriptions; Google Play also labels the app as containing ads and in-app purchases. | A candidate for free viewing with ads; the listing leaves the precise limits on that access unclear. |
| Melolo | The Indonesian App Store page describes free viewing and offers auto-renewing subscriptions, from weekly to annual plans. | Free access and paid plans coexist, with several subscription periods to compare. |
| ReelShort | Its U.S. store page describes a weekly subscription; the developer also describes rewarded ads and tasks for unlocking episodes. | An episode-by-episode free route differs from buying a pass. The current offer determines how quickly you can continue. |
That distinction matters most when a cliffhanger sends you straight to the next episode. A few rewarded unlocks may cover a short break; they do not tell you whether you can finish a whole series that evening. A weekly pass also renews on a different schedule from the monthly streaming subscriptions many viewers are used to.
Actors, interactive stories and BL: compare the actual catalog
My Drama and ReelShort give viewers two different ways into their productions. On My Drama, you can browse by performer: Eric Guilmette’s page lists Forbidden Eyes in the Dark, a thriller about an actress who moves into her grandmother’s estate and encounters a masked stalker.
ReelShort’s store description also highlights interactive live-action films, where the viewer makes choices. Those sit within a service whose sampled New Release shelf includes AI animation, so check the title’s format as well as its premise.
There is studio investment behind the category, too. In January, Holywater, FOX Entertainment and Dhar Mann Studios announced plans for an initial 40 vertical titles, with My Drama as their first distribution window.
For BL, compare the settings before choosing an app. Vigloo currently lists You Can’t Escape Me, pairing an emergency-room nurse with a mafia boss, and MATCHPLAY: Love Action, about a former idol and a stunt coordinator. ReelShort’s The School for Bad Boys uses a school setting and forbidden attraction. BL is available on both; these particular stories offer different worlds and relationships.
Vigloo also carries I Became the Bully Heir’s Stepsister, set around a Korean elite school and a powerful family, alongside those adult BL stories.
DramaBox spans contemporary relationships and supernatural romance: its store events include Fling With My Bestie’s Dad and Shifter Academy: Tame Alphas.
Beyond billionaire romance
The same revenge or fantasy tag can hide very different stories. These three public catalogs make that clear:
| Platform | A specific example | The story’s appeal |
|---|---|---|
| GoodShort | Reborn to Expose the Ghost Whisperer | A medical examiner confronts a fake psychic who takes credit for her autopsy findings: professional revenge built around exposing a fraud. |
| FlexTV | (DUBBED) The Tiny Tyrant of Go | A child prodigy and the game of Go, for a different kind of underdog story. |
| NetShort | 300-Year Nap: My Pets Rule | A girl wakes after three centuries to find her former pets have become powerful rulers. |
FlexTV also has a practical advantage if you watch away from your phone: its U.S. listing supports Apple TV.
Portuguese and Indonesian: look at the language edition
Southeast Asia accounted for 32% of Q1 downloads, Latin America 23% and India 22%, according to Sensor Tower. Those three regions supplied 77% of the total. An English-only platform list misses much of the audience.
For Portuguese dialogue, GoodShort’s Portuguese catalog separates dubbed and original releases. Substituta Errada para o Bilionário Implacável carries the Dublado label. The dubbed filter is a place to start for viewers in Brazil who want to listen in Portuguese rather than read subtitles.
For Indonesian dialogue, Natalie, Putri yang Terbuang carries the Sulih Suara label and credits Rosa Singerman and Ben Ubinas. This family revenge story follows an adopted daughter who is falsely accused and mistreated.
Vigloo offers a different language option: all 12 titles in our sample listed Indonesian captions in their public title information. These are subtitles. GoodShort’s labeled Indonesian releases above are dubbed editions. I Became the Bully Heir’s Stepsister, for example, lists Indonesian captions and names its cast, including Ki Hyunwoo and Min Chaeun.
MoboReels offers Portuguese, Indonesian, Filipino and Malay browsing menus. Audio availability is a separate question: look for a language-specific release or audio option on the series itself.
Local-language services also matter in India. In Sensor Tower’s Q2 2026 analysis, Story TV was the only short-drama app in India’s Top 10 app-download ranking. Its Hindi and Hinglish focus gives it a different audience from the English shelves sampled here.
AI short dramas include AI-generated and hybrid productions
SocialPeta and BidMatrix’s October report summary counts monthly advertised AI-generated, live-action-style drama titles rising from 1,479 in January to 11,962 in July—about eightfold. That measures titles being promoted, not satisfied viewers or viewing time. The current catalogs show several forms this content can take.
ReelShort’s sampled new-release shelf puts this change inside a mainstream service. Its title pages made affirmative or negative AI statements; the inspected pages at the other three platforms did not provide an equivalent set of disclosures. Missing labels cannot serve as an AI-free filter.
| Platform | What distinguishes its AI offering |
|---|---|
| ShortPeak | Its terms describe AI production. Wrong Crown is a royal rebirth fantasy about a deer princess and the Leopard King. |
| SagaBox | Combines vertical films with comics and AI character chat. Underneath the Burning Sky uses a school romance rather than a fantasy kingdom. |
| Loomi | Bring Back Imagination, announced in August, combines live-action filmmaking with AI characters and worlds in a story about a boy grieving his mother. |
| StardustTV | Carries AI entries alongside live-action series in the same catalog. |
| FlickReels | Its store description foregrounds AI-powered stories. |
ShortPeak’s Wrong Crown lists 24 episodes, with the first three free. SagaBox’s Underneath the Burning Sky lists 30, with the first five free. These give curious viewers a small sample of two very different premises before paid unlocks.
If you prefer following a human cast, My Drama’s actor pages and GoodShort’s named credits offer direct ways to browse. Credits do not rule out AI dubbing or effects; Loomi’s hybrid production shows how filmed performances and AI worlds can coexist.
